Now that we understand the EPA Asbestos Removal program more thoroughly, we await the funding cycle and will be applying for the necessary funds to remediate the asbestos problem in the building. As we have often said, it is a 'code red' issue keeping us from further renovation and find the great amount of money we need for the project has not been easy.
We have just applied for a grant to hire an expert to evaluate the marquee and make renovation recommendations.
After a professional review of the Schine Marquee it has been recommended that we not try to put a bandaid on it like we did in 2014. And that we replace the tracks that hold the glass backboards. It seems that age and wind tunnel damage have made it so that nothing stays in place very long.
So, we have iniated a MARQUEE FUND. All monies raised will go directly towards repair of the marquee this spring.

Schine Theater Projectwas a BIG Success!

CHA the consulting firm of choice under the Brownfield Grant Program is now in its study phase of the project. Progress in this regard comes slow but steady.
Beardsley Design is conducting an environmental study this third week in April, 2014 commissioned by the CCAC to investigate any incidental environmental disturbances at the Schine. More specifically, the effect the asbestos contamination has had on non-contaminated areas of the building.
The Cayuga County Arts Council (CCAC) has been awarded one of four Technical Assistance Grants (TAG) for the Auburn Schine Theater. The TAG program is a statewide program of the Preservation League of New York State and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). Only four TAG grants were awarded this grant period.
“Winning this grant is a testament to the commitment the Arts Council has shown toward the Schine project,” said Jim Loperfido, CCAC board chair.
Grant funds will be used for a full building condition survey, to be conducted by Crawford & Stearns, architects and preservation planners.
“The building survey will ensure that we continue on the proper course with the Schine Theater,” Loperfido said. “We are very excited about the future of the Schine.”
The Preservation League invests in people and projects that champion the essential role of preservation in community revitalization, sustainable economic growth, and the protection of our historic buildings and landscapes. It leads advocacy, economic development and education programs across New York State.
The Brownfields Project is underway starting with all day testing for asbestos in the Schine Building in June. It will be followed with another round of testing before we hear the results. We wait with baited breath and fingers crossed. More to follow...
Thank you to the Auburn City Council - thay have made a momentus move in approving the Arts Council's Brownfield Grant Application, finally giving hope to a building asbestos issue we have been trying to solve for two years now.
More to come.
